How did you discover your path as a writer, crafter, and Buddhist practitioner?

I was a freelance writer for over 20 years when COVID hit in 2020. As I planned for retirement, I invested more time in crafts and eventually owned a craft stall for two years—which taught me it wasn't my calling. But then in August 2025, my son started a cat sanctuary, and I became co-owner. That changed everything.

Also in 2020, I began a faith journey that led me away from the evangelical church I'd grown up in. After exploring and questioning, I've landed wholeheartedly in Buddhism, where I finally feel at home.

What role does Buddhist philosophy play in your creative work and service to others?

Buddhism teaches me to enjoy the little things in life—whether with people or animals. It's shown me that creativity itself is at the root of Buddhist practice; you see it in the intricate details of mandalas, temple art, the careful attention to each moment. That mindfulness flows into everything I make and write.

What kinds of writing and crafts do you create, and what draws you to these particular forms of expression?

I follow my heart, which means I'm always trying something new. I recreate Precious Moments figurines, make wreaths, create fabric flowers, do cross stitch, and recently I've discovered pixame—pixel art created through macrame. Each craft is a meditation in its own way.

As for my writing, I'm blessed to choose what I want to write about now. Currently I feel led to write about Buddhism and cat care, subjects that have become intertwined in my life. Writing gives me an outlet for the lessons our sanctuary's cats teach me daily.

How do you support your Buddhist sangha and the cat sanctuary you're involved with?

My Buddhist sangha is an act of love and passion—I believe in interdependence in action, supporting the world that supports us. The cat sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and I forward all profits from my writing and craft sales to it. Every piece I sell, every word I publish, circles back to caring for beings who need it. You can be part of this circle of care too by making a donation to our 501(c)(3) sanctuary.

What does community mean to you, and how does it shape the work you do?

Interconnected interdependence—that's community to me. I've been blessed so I can be a blessing. The cats give me purpose, presence, and countless lessons in resilience and grace. Writing gives me an outlet for those lessons. Crafting gives me a way to create new beauty in the world. It all flows together.

What are you currently working on or most excited about in your creative and philanthropic life?

Their suffering matters. Their comfort matters. Buddhism teaches that all beings want to be happy and free from pain, and the cats are my daily teachers in that truth. Right now, the sanctuary and I are growing together—more cats finding safety, more people discovering how they can help, more moments of watching a frightened stray finally relax into trust. That's what excites me: growth, healing, and the privilege of being part of it all.
